Sam's "Little Red Hens" Liam feeding the hens at Sam Yoder's Farm. These hens are called Rhode Island Reds, and are the best egg laying hens.
Buying "local" is equally as important as buying natural & organic. In fact, a main focus of the "organic movement," is... you're going to buy organic, buy local organic. It's a tremendous undertaking to farm organically and to raise livestock organically. A farmer operating under organic guidelines is faced with many restrictions. With the phrase "all natural & organic" becoming more popular, many buyers are looking for the "next thing." That "next thing" is surfacing in the care of livestock; it's called "certified humane." Certified Humane, is animals living under a low stress environment, they're given exceptional care, not feed antibiotics or growth hormones, etc. Sam's chickens are well cared for, and our reward... great tasting farm fresh brown eggs. Sam Yoder operates a wonderful business; his farm outside Greenwood is incredible (over 300 acres). Each day, those hens and roosters run around their yards (yes, they have multiple "changes of atmosphere" like the one seen above), they've got open doors to incredible houses where they can run around too, they lay their eggs wherever and whenever they choose, those eggs are gathered daily, inspected through a state of the art "egg inspection" machine, sorted, packed, and held for us to pick them up and include in Bella's Cookies. If you're ever in Delaware, you'll want to stop by for the experience. Below is a little more information about Sam.
From literature found at the farm... "Sam Yoder is a man who has dedicated his life to finding a better way to do just about everything. Early in his career as a buyer in the poultry industry he recognized the need for better-built chicken houses on Delmarva. This led him to establish Sam Yoder and Sons, Inc., a company that manufactures top-quality trusses for commercial and residential buildings, in 1978.
By the late 1990s Sam began noticing that more people had food allergies than ever before, especially children. As a lifelong farmer, he suspected that perhaps the chemicals and additives used to enhance yields were the culprits. In 1998, Sam launched Sam Yoder Farm and Store—a farm-to-table food operation committed to raising healthy, wholesome beef, pork, poultry and produce naturally and locally.
A visit to Sam Yoder's Farm and Store is a great way to reconnect with food at its source. You can see the livestock grazing in the pastures and chickens ranging freely—the way it used to be on family farms all across America. Our hens range freely in a special facility designed to keep them safe and healthy. We focus on stress-free environment and a wholesome diet that allows our chickens to do what comes naturally. Our all natural eggs are the only USDA approved operation in the state of Delaware."
